The Magic Gang - Concorde 2, Brighton - 25th September 2018 The Magic Gang – Concorde 2, Brighton – 25th September 2018 It’s often strange seeing a band we’ve seen adorn so many of our small venues over the years become a genuine nationwide institution. This has happened to Brighton’s The Magic Gang seemingly overnight. From playing in front of little to no people, to releasing their debut album and winning over teenagers left, right and centre. Their Concorde 2 show, which saw screams akin to a chart-storming boyband, was a celebration of their early years and their debut record.
  • The Great Escape Festival – 2018

The Great Escape Festival – 2018 The Great Escape Festival – 2018 To paraphrase that Marmite film classic, the streets were alive with the sound of music! Over three long days and nights, Brighton did truly come alive as The Great Escape juggernaut rolled into town for its 13th edition. The festival for new music saw over 500 acts playing in 40-odd venues, representing countries from all around the globe. If you add in the The Alternative Great Escape, and the plethora of events and pop-up performances arranged off the back of TGE and AGE, you’re looking at closer to 1,000 acts in 80-odd venues. Yes, it was mad, but glorious. Helped along by some beautiful mid-May sunshine, somehow within all the chaos, Brightonsfinest were out in force, documenting, commenting, and enjoying what we like to do best. Watch live...
  • The Magic Gang – Interview 2018

The Magic Gang – Interview 2018 It took a while. But when they finally got it together, it was good. Very good. Formed and developed in Brighton, their recently released debut album has been winning some of those super rare 100%, 10/10 reviews, from people who can't get enough of their 70s and 80s classic pop-rock songs. Where harmonies and hooks are the most important thing. The four-piece have it in spades it seems, and we'll miss them as they move out of Brighton and head for the Big Smoke. However, they'll be back for this year's The Great Escape, as well as a date with Concorde 2 in the autumn. Brightonsfinest hooked up with guitarist, singer and songwriter Jack Kaye while they were in town recently for an in-store at Resident.
  • The Magic Gang are back in town

The Magic Gang are back in town Brighton formed, The Magic Gang have just announced their biggest home town date yet, at Concorde 2, Tuesday 25th September. Riding the crest of a wave of adulation, they recently released their debut album to widespread acclaim, thanks to their superlative songwriting and old classic pop-rock tropes. Weezer, The Beach Boys and The Beatles are immediate reference points for their breezy, lovelorn songs that fly by on infectious melodic hooks, harmony singing and an on-the-surface easy-going vibe.
  • The Magic Gang – The Magic Gang

The Magic Gang - The Magic Gang The Magic Gang – The Magic Gang In what seems like an age in the making, The Magic Gang have finally got round to releasing their debut record. The result from the Brighton-based group is a rich catalogue of life-affirming slacker pop anthems that make up one of the best UK guitar debuts in years. The album will make for an intriguing listen for older fans of the band; with more than two thirds of it either previously released or reworked older favourites. There are shades of The Beach Boys and The Beatles and smatterings of Mac DeMarco and Weezer throughout, with the...
  • Local acts in-store at Resident

Local acts in-store at Resident There's a spate of juicy looking in-stores at Resident next week, including a couple of Brighton bands who are releasing their debut albums. The highly touted The Magic Gang (20th March) have been a favourite of Brightonsfinest since we first came across them (they were featured on our first compilation, Brightonsfinest Volume 1), and their self-titled debut is sure to get them seriously noticed. Also generating plenty of column inches are Fickle Friends (19th March), whose debut album is full of 80s-influenced party poppers.
  • The Magic Gang

The hotly-tipped Brighton-based band The Magic Gang have announced details of their debut self-titled album, out 16th March, alongside a tour of the UK. First fruit from the album, 'Getting Along', has also just been released. Check out the new video
  • The Great Escape Festival 2017 - 18th-20th May 2017

The Great Escape Festival 2017 - 18th-20th May 2017 The Great Escape Festival 2017 -  18th-20th May 2017 Another year, and another huge comedown after the exhilaration of three days of heady music, heavy bodily abuse, and heaving bodies. It’s kind of the same as a festival in a field, minus the camping, and the mud. There are more than 450 performances on over 30 stages, played out to an overall audience of 20,000. Like a traditional festival, there is plenty of schlepping from one stage to the next, re-fuelling at various points, staying up too late and getting up too early. Crucially though, almost everyone is here to actually watch and listen to music, and everyone has a real...
  • The Alternative Escape Festival – 18th-20th May 2017

The Alternative Escape Festival – 18th - 20th May 2017 The Alternative Escape Festival – 18th-20th May 2017 THURSDAY This year I was off-duty from the main Great Escape Festival, leaving it in the capable hands of our growing team of writers and photographers (and writer-photographers), I instead dipped into the free festival which runs alongside the main event every year, taking over any left-over scraps of venues which the behemoth of Europe’s largest new music festival has yet to absorb. In fact, as I found myself involved in three different performances as a musician, I didn’t get too much time to explore but I did see some great bands over the three days nonetheless.
  • The Great Escape - 2017

The Great Escape - 2017 The Great Escape 2017 Playlist chosen by Adam Ryan - Main Great Escape Festival programmer Now entering its twelfth year, The Great Escape (TGE) goes from strength to strength and continues to be an established and much loved showcase for new music from around the world. In a time when heritage acts and old timers are increasingly exploiting our hard earned spare cash, TGE is an island of freshness, surrounded by the (sometimes pleasingly, it has to be admitted) stench of artists rolling out the hits once again, taking away valuable exposure to new music. And contrary to some...
  • The Magic Gang – Patterns – 14th April 2016

The Magic Gang – Patterns – 14th April 2016 The Magic Gang – Patterns – 14th April 2016 It’s a fine line trodden by indie bands with strong pop sensibilities. It’s possible to openly embrace accessibility while still retaining some semblance of cool, but equally they can just end up feeling disingenuous and uninspired. Tonight’s support act Vitamin unfortunately fall into the later category. Sounding like they were grown in a petri dish by a major label, they may have the choruses and the coiffed, pouty frontman, but it all feels a bit soulless. Based on the lukewarm at best response from the crowd, I’m clearly not alone in thinking this.

  • The Magic Gang – Interview - 2015

The Magic Gang – Interview - 2015 There are a few groups that people keep mentioning, one of them is The Magic Gang. Having formed in Brighton, they’ve been building an ever rising local fan base and after a very successful mini tour around the UK, they are now on everyone’s lips as “the ones to watch”. There is no doubt that there are big things are on the horizon for Jack (rhythm guitar and vocal), Kris (lead guitar and vocals), Paeris (drums) and Angus (bass and vocals). I recently spoke to the band at the Brighton’s Vice Party to find out more. Where did you all grow up? [JACK] We are from area’s around Bournemouth. We didn’t know each other when we were there, but we all came to Brighton around the same...
  • The Great Escape - 2015

The Great Escape - 2015 The Great Escape - 2015 Jeff Hemmings Well, that was something else, wasn't it? As a colleague from local radio station Juice FM put it: 'That was the best three days! I didn't want it to stop!' I'll wager that a great many others, both industry people and punters, shared that sentiment when they staggered out of the last venue, bar, or hostelry, for the last time.
