  • The Great Escape - 2017

The Great Escape - 2017 The Great Escape 2017 Playlist chosen by Adam Ryan - Main Great Escape Festival programmer Now entering its twelfth year, The Great Escape (TGE) goes from strength to strength and continues to be an established and much loved showcase for new music from around the world. In a time when heritage acts and old timers are increasingly exploiting our hard earned spare cash, TGE is an island of freshness, surrounded by the (sometimes pleasingly, it has to be admitted) stench of artists rolling out the hits once again, taking away valuable exposure to new music. And contrary to some...

  • Drill Festival Brighton 2014 - Part 2

Drill Festival Brighton 2014 Drill Festival 2014 - Part 2 December is not usually the most promising of months for gigs, but Drill:Brighton attempted to bring the noise to 14 venues around the city, featuring a plethora of known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns, centred around the band Wire, whose musical legacy has influenced and inspired many of the acts on the bill.   Brighton were very well represented at Drill:Brighton, and one of the leading lights of the underground scene are The Physics House Band, a powerhouse trio made up of drums, bass and guitar, with the occasional keyboard to add some light and texture. For a band still in their early 20s they are remarkably tight and accomplished bunch of musicians, alternating light and dark, and quiet and loud, in an astounding...
  • Drill Festival Brighton - 2014 - Part 1

Drill Festival Brighton 2014 Drill Festival - 2014 - Part 1 The first act I wanted to see was BitBinat the Sallis Benny Theatre. How the first act on could be 15 minutes late with his equipment all ready to go is beyond me. I took it as fate telling me to see Scarlet Rascal instead who were playing at the Green Door Store, and they were brilliant. The 4-piece Bristol band created an intense, dark atmosphere helped by the dull shadowed lighting put on them. Think Joy Division mixed with The Horrors, and Lou Reed vocals. If you are into your bass driven post-punk, these are ones to watch as they put on a mighty strong performance. Keep an eye out for their debut album on INVADA Records, set for release early 2015.
  • Blood Red Shoes - Interview - 2014

Blood Red Shoes - Interview - 2014 Made up of Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter, Blood Red Shoes formed in Brighton ten years ago, from the ashes of their respective bands; Cat on Form, who released two albums of hardcore punk music on Southern Records, and Lady Muck. Coming from the DIY scene, they organised a jam one day and within a few weeks had written some songs and organised a gig, such is the chemistry that immediately sparked into life. Hard working and with an unrivalled enthusiasm for music, their loud and energetic music is a mix of punk, post-punk and underground american rock and hardcore, drawing...
  • Blood Red Shoes - Concorde 2 - 25th April 2014

Blood Red Shoes Blood Red Shoes - Concorde 2 - 25th April 2014 Blood Red Shoes started their set with a blistering rendition of the instrumental opener to their latest eponymous fourth album 'Welcome Home'. There couldn't be a more appropriate opening song tonight as Blood Red Shoes have come home, as Steve reveals later in the show. They’re back playing on a Brighton stage for the first time in over two years and they are more than welcome. After an extremely entertaining warm-up set from psycho-billy/punk duo Slaves I squeezed my way through the crowd to get a taste of the mosh-pit that was starting to develop during their finale. This crowd are young, fun and keen to pogo in a way I've not seen up close for years.
  • Blood Red Shoes - Blood Red Shoes

Blood Red Shoes – Blood Red Shoes Blood Red Shoes fourth album opens with the instrumental track 'Welcome Home' which I like to think of as the sound of the band settling into the rented warehouse space in Berlin where they lived for several months last year recording the new album. Singer/drummer Steve Ansell explains the freedom they found...
